Self-hosted alternatives to Appwrite Cloud

Appwrite Cloud is the hosted version of the open-source Appwrite backend platform, with auth, databases, storage, functions, messaging, hosting and realtime. One listed app does its main job and runs in your own Cloudflare account.

Each answer comes from the app’s README and source code, compared with the features Appwrite Cloud describes on its own site.

Open-source Firebase alternative with auth, a realtime database, file storage and remote config on Cloudflare

What a Appwrite Cloud user would miss
It has no messaging service and no SMS or magic-link sign-in, documents only a JavaScript and HTTP client, and its functions and hosting need Workers for Platforms.
What it adds
Apache-2.0 and runs in your own Cloudflare account, with each project's data in its own Durable Objects, 30-day database rollback and Remote Config for feature flags.
  • Partly Auth with email, SMS, OAuth, anonymous sessions and magic URLs. Email and password, Google and GitHub sign-in, anonymous users, roles and project-signed JWTs; no SMS or magic URL sign-in found.
  • Yes Databases. Schemaless JSON collections and typed SQL tables with filters, aggregates and live queries.
  • Partly Storage with compression, encryption and image transformations. R2 buckets with public, authenticated and owner-only access, signed URLs and multipart uploads; no image transformations found.
  • Partly Functions with isolated runtimes and event-driven execution. The hosting agent can deploy backend Workers on Workers for Platforms, a paid add-on; no event-triggered functions found.
  • No Messaging for email, SMS and push. No email, SMS or push messaging service; email is only an optional secret for auth emails.
  • Partly Sites that deploy frontends from Git. Static sites and Workers served at app subdomains, deployed from the CLI or on git push; self-hosting needs Workers for Platforms.
  • Yes Realtime event subscriptions. Subscribe on any collection or table query, multiplexed over one WebSocket per client.
