Self-hosted alternatives to AWS Step Functions

AWS Step Functions orchestrates workflows across AWS services with a visual designer, retries and execution history. One listed app does its main job and runs in your own Cloudflare account.

Each answer comes from the app’s README and source code, compared with the features AWS Step Functions describes on its own site.

  • AwaitStep canvas with a 12-node workflow using try/catch, a forEach loop and parallel branches

Drag-and-drop builder that generates TypeScript for Cloudflare Workflows and deploys it to your account

Drag-and-drop builder that generates TypeScript for Cloudflare Workflows and deploys it to your account

What a AWS Step Functions user would miss
It deploys to Cloudflare Workflows only, starts runs from the UI, the REST API or an HTTP request with no built-in schedule trigger, and has no AWS service integrations.
What it adds
It is Apache-2.0 and generates ordinary TypeScript for Cloudflare Workflows that you can eject, with versioned deploys with locking and rollback, a REST API with scoped keys and a marketplace for custom nodes.
  • Yes Visual workflow designer. A drag-and-drop canvas with 12 built-in nodes, installable marketplace nodes, undo and redo, and a live preview of the generated TypeScript.
  • Yes State machines with choices, parallel branches and waits. Branch, Parallel, Race, Loop, Sleep, Sleep Until and Sub-Workflow nodes compile to Cloudflare Workflow code.
  • Yes Error handling and retries. Step nodes with retry limits, delays and backoff, and Try, Catch and Finally nodes.
  • Partly Parallel processing and iteration over datasets. Parallel branches and forEach, while or count loops; Cloudflare caps concurrent workflow instances at 1,000 per account.
  • Partly Integrations with AWS services. An HTTP Request node and about 45 marketplace nodes for services such as Slack, Stripe, Notion and S3; no catalog of AWS services.
  • Yes Execution history and monitoring. Run status and errors, version history with rollback, and pause, resume and terminate controls.
  • Yes Human approval steps. A Wait for Event node and a Human Approval template.
  • Partly Agentic workflows with human-in-the-loop control. An AI Agent Loop template and OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini nodes; no agent framework.
