Self-hosted alternatives to Back4App

Back4App is a hosted backend-as-a-service with MongoDB databases, authentication, auto-generated APIs, cloud functions, file storage and push notifications. One listed app does its main job and runs in your own Cloudflare account.

Each answer comes from the app’s README and source code, compared with the features Back4App describes on its own site.

Open-source Firebase alternative with auth, a realtime database, file storage and remote config on Cloudflare

What a Back4App user would miss
It has no push notifications, no GraphQL and no native mobile SDKs, and server-side functions are limited to Workers deployed through the hosting agent.
What it adds
Apache-2.0 and runs in your own Cloudflare account, with each project's data in its own Durable Objects, 30-day database rollback and Remote Config for feature flags.
  • Yes Document database with real-time sync. Schemaless JSON collections with live queries, stored in SQLite-backed Durable Objects rather than MongoDB.
  • Yes Authentication with ACLs and role-based access. Better Auth with roles and permissions, project-signed JWTs and per-collection access modes (public, authenticated, owner, closed)
  • Partly Auto-generated GraphQL and REST APIs with SDKs for several platforms. REST routes with an OpenAPI document per project and a JavaScript client; no GraphQL and no iOS, Android, Flutter or .NET SDKs.
  • Partly Cloud functions with custom server-side logic. Backend Workers through the hosting agent on Workers for Platforms; no functions that run inside the database or auth layer.
  • Partly Web deployment from GitHub with CI/CD. Git push deploys with branch URLs for static sites and Workers, but self-hosting needs Workers for Platforms.
  • Yes Live queries and instant data sync. Subscribe on any collection or table query over one WebSocket.
  • Partly File storage with a global CDN. R2 buckets with access modes and signed URLs; no CDN delivery features described.
  • No Push notifications for iOS and Android. No messaging agent or push code in the repository.
