Self-hosted alternatives to Convex

Convex is a hosted backend with a reactive database, TypeScript server functions, file storage and built-in scheduling. One listed app does its main job and runs in your own Cloudflare account.

Each answer comes from the app’s README and source code, compared with the features Convex describes on its own site.

What a Convex user would miss
It has no server functions that run beside the data and no scheduler, which are the core of the Convex model.
What it adds
Apache-2.0 and runs in your own Cloudflare account, with each project's data in its own Durable Objects, 30-day database rollback and Remote Config for feature flags.
  • Yes Reactive document database with schema validation and indexes. Live queries on JSON collections and typed SQL tables; collections need no schema and tables are typed columns.
  • Partly TypeScript query, mutation and action functions. Backend Workers can be deployed through the hosting agent, but they are ordinary Workers, not transactional query and mutation functions.
  • Yes Realtime sync to connected clients. One WebSocket per client with a snapshot followed by added, modified and removed deltas.
  • Yes Authentication through Convex Auth or providers such as Auth0 and Clerk. Built-in Better Auth with project-signed JWTs.
  • Yes File storage. R2 buckets with access modes, signed URLs and multipart uploads.
  • No Scheduled functions and cron jobs. No scheduler or cron feature described in the README.
  • No Full-text and vector search. No vector or embedding code found, and full-text search is not described.
