Self-hosted alternatives to ImprovMX

ImprovMX is an email forwarding service that sends mail for custom-domain addresses to existing inboxes and can send mail from the domain. One listed app does its main job and runs in your own Cloudflare account.

Each answer comes from the app’s README and source code, compared with the features ImprovMX describes on its own site.

What a ImprovMX user would miss
A forward rule has one destination, there is no regex matching or SMTP relay, forwarding needs mail received through Cloudflare, and it is a full mail app rather than a forwarder.
What it adds
A forward rule can keep a copy in a mailbox, and the same install runs webmail, a calendar and an AI assistant.
  • Yes Forward mail from custom-domain addresses to an existing inbox. Domain forward rules send mail to an address, with an option to keep a copy, for domains received through Cloudflare.
  • Yes Catch-all aliases. Domain forward or store rules act as the catch-all after exact mailboxes and aliases.
  • Partly Regex-based routing. Rules match recipient, sender, subject or content, regex is not listed.
  • Yes Routing rules for incoming mail. Reject, forward and store rules with priorities.
  • No Forwarding to several recipients at once. A forward rule has one destination address.
  • Partly SMTP and API sending. POST /api/v1/send with API keys and attachments, no SMTP relay.
  • Partly Email logs for troubleshooting. Audit log and webhook delivery records, no per-message forwarding log listed.
  • Yes API and webhooks. Scoped API keys, a domain management API and webhooks for message.inbound, message.outbound and message.failed with retries.
