Self-hosted alternatives to Mem

Mem is an AI notes app that captures, organizes and searches notes and offers a chat that can create and edit them. Two listed apps do its main job and run in your own Cloudflare account.

Each answer comes from the app’s README and source code, compared with the features Mem describes on its own site.

What a Mem user would miss
In-app chat, in-app dictation, offline editing and automatic formatting of notes.
What it adds
Memories, vectors and the models all run in your Cloudflare account on D1, Vectorize and Workers AI, with a private Personal layer and a Shared team layer.
  • Partly Voice mode that turns spoken thoughts into notes. Voice and text capture through iOS Shortcuts; no in-app dictation.
  • Yes Chrome extension that saves web pages. A Chrome extension in a separate repository and a bookmarklet.
  • Partly Email forwarding into notes. Gmail and Outlook email and calendar integrations; no forwarding address described.
  • Yes Deep Search by meaning. Recall by meaning with Vectorize and Workers AI embeddings, plus full-text search for exact names.
  • Partly Heads Up resurfacing of notes at relevant moments. A brief of due items, open commitments and stale memories, and PWA push reminders; not triggered by meetings.
  • Partly Agentic chat that creates, edits and organizes notes. No chat in the dashboard; MCP clients such as Claude and ChatGPT read and write memories.
  • No Offline support. No offline mode described; the installed PWA is used for push reminders.
  • Yes Version history with rollback. A history tool shows each memory's recorded changes with the text before each one, and undo restores from the trash.

Memos-style quick notes and a shared team knowledge base, with semantic search and long-term memory for AI agents

What a Mem user would miss
In-app chat, a browser extension, email-in and automatic organization.
What it adds
It is AGPL-3.0, Memos-compatible with import from Memos and flomo, and has a team mode with roles and three visibility levels, projects with a kanban board, and a memory page where you review what agents recorded.
  • Partly Voice mode that turns spoken thoughts into notes. /capture streams speech-to-text into a note; no automatic cleanup into formatted notes.
  • No Chrome extension that saves web pages. No browser extension described in the README.
  • No Email forwarding into notes. No email-in address described.
  • Yes Deep Search by meaning. Workers AI embeddings with Vectorize for semantic Find, with SQLite full-text search as a fallback.
  • Partly Heads Up resurfacing of notes at relevant moments. Daily Review, Random Walk and related-note recommendations; nothing triggered by meetings.
  • Partly Agentic chat that creates, edits and organizes notes. No chat inside the app; Claude Code, Cursor and Codex read and write notes through the CLI, a skill and MCP endpoints.
  • Yes Offline support. An installable PWA queues offline edits and replays them when online.
  • Yes Version history with rollback. Revision history with diffs and one-click restore.
