Self-hosted alternatives to NewsBlur

NewsBlur is a hosted feed reader for RSS and web feeds, with web, iOS and Android apps and filters trained on authors, tags and titles. One listed app does its main job and runs in your own Cloudflare account.

Each answer comes from the app’s README and source code, compared with the features NewsBlur describes on its own site.

Private RSS, Atom and JSON Feed reader with passkey-only sign-in and Reeder-compatible sync APIs

Who it suits
NewsBlur users who mainly read blogs and news sites in folders, expand truncated feeds and use Reeder-style apps, and who do not rely on trained filters or newsletters.
What a NewsBlur user would miss
It has no training with highlighting, no article search, no newsletter intake, no custom story tags and no native apps.
What it adds
Sign-in is passkey-only with invitations from an administrator, refresh intervals adapt to how often a feed changes, and optional AI summaries run on Workers AI.
  • Partly RSS feeds read on the web and in iOS and Android apps. Reads RSS, Atom, RDF and JSON Feed in a responsive web app with feed discovery and OPML import; no native iOS or Android apps.
  • Yes Text view that expands truncated stories. Fetches the full article from the publisher page for a single entry.
  • Partly Training to hide or highlight stories by author, tag, title or text. Per-subscription exclusion patterns on title, content and author; no highlighting, scoring or tag filter found.
  • Yes River of news: a folder read as one stream. A category opens as one stream of entries, ordered by publish or arrival time.
  • No Search across all subscriptions with saved searches. The Cmd+K spotlight finds a feed by name; no article search or saved searches found.
  • Partly Saved stories with custom tags. Entries can be starred or archived; no custom tags found.
  • No Email newsletters read in the reader. No email-to-feed intake found.
  • Partly Sync with third-party apps such as Reeder, ReadKit and Unread. Google Reader and Fever APIs with revocable app tokens, partial support that works with Reeder Classic; apps that only target NewsBlur's own service are not covered.
