Self-hosted alternatives to The Old Reader

The Old Reader is a hosted RSS reader that follows websites by address, groups feeds in folders and lets users share posts with friends. One listed app does its main job and runs in your own Cloudflare account.

Each answer comes from the app’s README and source code, compared with the features The Old Reader describes on its own site.

Who it suits
The Old Reader users who read feeds in folders on their own and use Reeder or a similar app, without the friends, sharing or comment features.
What a The Old Reader user would miss
It has no friends, sharing or comments, no likes that other people see, and it reaches Reeder-style apps through partial Google Reader and Fever support, so apps that only target The Old Reader's own service are not covered.
What it adds
The reader can fetch the full article for truncated feeds, sign-in is passkey-only, optional AI summaries run on Workers AI, and the data stays in your own Cloudflare account.
  • Yes Subscribe by site address with feed detection and OPML import. Feed discovery from a website address with a choice when several feeds are found, and OPML import and export.
  • Yes Folders that open as one combined stream. Categories group feeds and a category opens as one stream of entries.
  • Partly Keyboard shortcuts and list navigation. J and k move between entries and a help dialog lists shortcuts; entries show as a list beside a reading pane, with no collapsed list view found.
  • Partly Like posts into a Liked folder. Entries can be starred or archived for personal use; no likes visible to other people.
  • No Share posts, follow friends and comment. A private reader with no sharing, friends or comments found.
  • Partly Mobile and desktop apps through a Google Reader-like API. Google Reader and Fever APIs with revocable app tokens, partial support that works with Reeder Classic; apps that only target The Old Reader's own service are not covered.
  • Yes Bookmarklet to subscribe from any page. The add dialog offers a bookmarklet that opens /feeds?addFeedUrl= with the current page address.
