HQBase

HQBase is open-source team email that keeps the app, the mail and the Cloudflare credentials in your own Cloudflare account. A setup wizard connects your domains and turns on Email Routing and Email Sending, and every install and update verifies a signed release.

The Deploy to Cloudflare button installs the source of the latest signed stable release, and the first build generates BETTER_AUTH_SECRET and VAPID keys. The /setup wizard then asks for a short-lived Cloudflare OAuth permission instead of a pasted API token. HQBase uses it to check and create the required Cloudflare resources and set up mail for each domain, then revokes it. The wizard ends by creating the owner account and the first shared mailboxes. The workspace covers shared mailboxes with per-mailbox access, multi-domain setup, a composer with drafts, contacts, labels and audit history. A PWA client for desktop and mobile gets self-hosted push notifications. Herald, a native macOS client, is maintained by independent community developers, and the HQBase maintainers have tested it for compatibility. AI agents can have their own agent mailboxes and connect through the OAuth-protected remote MCP server or the Mail API, and the Worker serves SKILL.md files for mail, mailbox and provisioning tasks. The app is built with Hono, React, better-auth, Drizzle ORM and TipTap, and runs as a Worker with static assets. Email Routing delivers inbound mail to the Worker's email handler, and the send_email binding sends outbound mail. D1 stores data and R2 stores mail objects. A Durable Object handles mail events, a Queue with a dead-letter queue runs background jobs, and a cron trigger fires daily. Before an update, the updater verifies the signed release manifest and archive digest and records a D1 Time Travel bookmark.

Good to know

The connected domain must be active on Cloudflare DNS in the same account, so domains on other DNS providers cannot be used. The owner must log in with an address outside the connected workspace domains. The project started in August 2026 and has a small contributor base.
